A dancing event at a community space. There are various women dancing, and the space is decorated with balloons.

Our assets, our future: the economics, outcomes and sustainability of assets in community ownership was published in 2019 by Power to Change and MHCLG to create a national picture of community asset ownership, to assess their financial health and economic impact.

There is little debate about the social value of village halls, community shops or local arts centres owned and operated by the community. Assets like these give people a greater sense of connection to the places where they live and support them to lead more fulfilling lives.

But what is less well known is the economic contribution made by community-owned assets, and their overall financial health is not well understood. In light of their importance to local communities, this report sets out to address that evidence gap.

What will I learn?

The report looks at:

  • the current state of assets in the community
  • how assets come into the community
  • the financial health of assets in community ownership
  • what affects the financial health of community assets
  • the costs and benefits of community ownership.
